Trip Highlights

On this page you’ll find some of the sights we’ll visit on your trip.

Lochnagar Crater

The Lochnagar mine was an underground explosive charge, secretly planted by the British to be ready for 1 July 1916, the first day on the Somme. The mine was sprung at 7:28 a.m. on 1 July 1916 and left a crater 69 ft (21 m) deep and 330 ft (100 m) wide.

John Condon

Pte. John Condon was an Irish soldier killed during the First World War, at the age of 14 years. He was killed in action in a gas attack during the Second Battle of Ypres

The animal memorial near Pozières

It is estimated that over eight million horses, donkeys, and mules died in World War I. This memorial established in 2016 pays respect to the many animals that died in the First World War.

The execution post in Poperinge

A grim reminder of the First World War remains within the Poperinge town hall, where two death cells are preserved and outside in the courtyard, where there is a public execution post used by firing squads.

The Ring Of Remembrance

The memorial honours the 576,606 soldiers of forty different nationalities who died at Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The monument consists of 500 metal panels that are arranged in an ellipse pattern, each 3 meters (almost 10 ft) in height. Each panel contains approximately 1200 names of fallen soldiers, listed alphabetically by last name.

Wellington Tunnels

From the Middle Ages through to the 19th century, the chalk beds underneath Arras were extensively quarried to supply stone for the town's buildings. In 1916 the British forces controlling Arras decided to re-use the underground quarries to aid a planned offensive against the Germans. The quarries were to be linked up so that they could be used both as shelters from the incessant German shelling and as a means of conveying troops to the front in secrecy and safety.

The Langemark German Cemetery

More than 44,000 soldiers are buried here. The village was the scene of the first poison gas attacks by the Germans in 1915. The site was visited by Adolf Hitler during the Second World War.

Betty Stevenson

Bertha "Betty" Gavin Stevenson, a volunteer with the YMCA, is buried in the Étaples Military Cemetery in France. She was killed during a German air raid on May 30, 1918, at the age of 21, while helping French refugees.

Ulster Tower

The Ulster Tower is Northern Ireland's national war memorial in France. It is located in Thiepval on the World War I battlefield of the Somme. The tower commemorates the soldiers of the 36th (Ulster) Division and all Ulstermen who served in the war.
